Common Places to Find Mold

Mold is a dangerous spore that can cause an array of problems if left untreated. Mold is part of the environment, which means it can be found anywhere. Although mold that is found outdoors does not usually pose a problem, mold that starts to grow indoors can be dangerous and cause serious damage to a building and cause a wide-range of health problems. Mold needs moisture, a food source, and oxygen to grow, and it grows best when the temperature is between 40 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Common Places to Find Mold

Although mold can accumulate anywhere, there are common places where it can easily grow. It is crucial that an individual is aware of where mold can grow and how it can be treated. Mold grows rapidly where excess moisture is present. Common sources of mold include:

  • Steam from showers
  • Floods
  • Leaks in roofs
  • Damp crawl spaces
  • Wet clothing

There are certain areas in a building where mold can grow easily. Here are the most common places to find mold in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties:

Bathroom

One of the most typical places to find mold is in a bathroom. Steam from a shower can make the room humid, which makes it an ideal place for mold to grow. In most cases, bathrooms are not ventilated well enough to eliminate humidity quickly, so the lingering moisture makes a bathroom an ideal place for mold to grow.

Attics

Attics are another common place to find mold. If a building is not insulated properly, then moisture from the base of the building will rise to the attack. Another factor that makes attics vulnerable to mold is a leaky roof. When a leak is present in a roof, then water will accumulate in the roof. An attic with standing water will more than likely have mold present.

Windows

Condensation will form on a window because of the different air temperatures on each side of the window. If there is dirt or grime on the window glass, then it can be a food source for mold, which can cause it to accumulate very quickly. Mold can also be found on window frames if the condensation from the glass comes in contact with the frame.

Air Conditioner

Mold can grow easily on an air conditioner. When air cools and circulates through an air conditioner, condensation can form in the ducts and coils. If mold is present in an air conditioner, then it can spread through an entire building and lead to serious health problems.

Walls

Drywall is a breeding ground for mold because it is high in cellulose. Mold also grows easily in drywall because spaces behind walls have humid air. Mold can also grow in wallpaper because the wallpaper glue can retain debris that could serve as a food source for mold to grow.

Health Problems Caused by Mold

If mold is present in a building, then it can lead to a variety of health problems. Some common health issues that are caused by mold include:

  • Asthma attacks
  • Headaches
  • Upper respiratory problems
  • Stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Eye irritation
  • Skin irritation

If there is mold present in a building, it is imperative to have it removed immediately to prevent health problems. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) stated individuals with weakened immune systems and those with chronic lung illnesses are at risk for developing serious complications in their lungs if they are exposed to mold.

If there is mold in a building, then a professional restoration company can effectively eliminate mold. If an individual tries to get rid of mold on his or her own, then the mold may not completely be removed. If you have any questions about our services, then contact us!
